Press Journal, W. J. Buchanan Dies Suddenly of
Heart Attack Louisiana friends of the family were shocked and sadden Monday we learned of the death of Senator W. J. Buchanan one of Pike county's best known and most useful citizens. He expired at his home in Eolia at 6:45 o'clock Monday morning, death being due to an attack of heart trouble. While he had not been feeling well for several days, he was able to be up and around and attended morning and evening services Sunday at the Eolia Methodist Episcopal church, of which he was a official member. During the night he became ill and summoned a physician who stated that Mr. Buchanan responded well to the treatment, but later suffered a sudden heart attach which resulted fatally. The funeral will take place from the Methodist Episcopal church, south in Eolia at 2 pm Wednesday afternoon and will be in charge of pastor Rev. J. A. Medley. He will be assisted by Rev. B. Marvin Harris of Paynesville and Rev. J. D. Randolph of Mexico. Interment will be the cemetery of St. Johns church in Eolia. Senator Buchanan is survived by his wife and one son, W. J. Buchanan, Jr., who is connected with the National Stock Yards, East St. Louis, his home being in St. Louis. He also leaves a sister, Mrs. Hudson of Corso, MO and a brother, L. B. Buchanan of Clarksville." Mr. Buchanan was born at Clarksville, April 12, 1867. He was educated in the public schools of Pike county and was a successful farmer and stock raiser until 1902 when he became cashier of the Bank of Eolia and was continuously connected with the bank, being later made its president, until the time of his death. For 32 years he had been a member of the undertaking firm of Gooch and Buchanan in Eolia. In November 1910, Mr. Buchanan was elected to the state senate from the eleventh district to fill the unexpired term of Eugene W. Stark, deceased. While in the state senate he was chairman of the committee on banks and banking and on accounts and miscellaneous laws and was a member of the appropriation, railroad and internal improvements, the university and normal schools, agriculture college and school of mines. On November 14, 1893, Mr. Buchanan was married to Miss Julia F. Howing, a member of a preeminent Pike county family. Mr. Buchanan was one of the most influential and prominent members of the Methodist church at Eolia and was a member of the board of stewards and for several years taught a Sunday school class.

Press Journal, Last Rites For W. J. Buchanan Held Wednesday Business is suspended in home
town of deceased Overtly shocked and saddened when they learned Monday morning of the sudden death of one of their most useful and best beloved citizens, the good people of Eolia suspended business Wednesday afternoon to assemble in masse at the Methodist church to pay a touching tribute of respect to the memory of their citizen, Senator W. J. Buchanan. The large ... of relatives and friends who assembled for the rites was not confined to the populace of the little town near the southern border of Pike county. Every town and practically every neighborhood in Pike county was represented at the gathering and in addition there were a number from neighboring counties and cities. An hour before the time set for the funeral service to begin all seats in the Methodist Episcopal church, of which deceased was an honored member, were occupied. ... many had to stay during the service. Hundreds of friends of Senator Buchanan passed by the casket which was banked with a gorgeous display of lovely flowers to take a farewell look at the features of their neighbor and friend. Included in the number was a number of colored citizens of the community. William Jackson Buchanan was born April 12, 1867, near Clarksville, Mo. His father’s name was William Bryan Buchanan and his mother’s was Sarah Jane Dugan Buchanan. On Nov 15, 1893, he was married to Miss Julia F. Howing of Eolia, Mo. To this union was born one child. William Jackson Buchanan, Jr. They have resided continuously in or near Eolia with the exception of a short period of time when Mr. Buchanan was state senator and resided in Jefferson City. He died Nov 3, 1930 at his home. To mourn his demise are his widow, his son and wife of St. Louis, his brother, Lloyd of Clarksville, his sister, Mrs. George Hudson, a number of nieces and nephews and other relatives and a host of friends throughout the country. He united with the Methodist church in 1897 and was a member of the Masonic fraternity.
