June 5, 1890
pg. 1, col. 3:

G. D. Hawkins died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Humprehy South, near Vandalia last Thursday morning at 6 o’clock.  Had he lived until Dece. 13th, next, he would have been ninty years of age.  He was sick only about 24 hours and died without a struggle.  He was the grandfather of the TIMES editor and is know to many of our readers.  Up to about 18 months ago he resided near New London, where he raised a large family.  For many years he had been a member of the Christian Church.  His remains were taken to New London Friday for interment, Eld. J. B. Corwine officiating at his funeral.
